Don’t want to be a Somebody

“Sayin, ‘look at me, baby, look at me. I’m beautiful, I’m beautiful, I’m somebody.” Lyrics from “The Disco Strangler” by The Eagles

Growing accustomed to being a Nobody takes time, effort, humiliation and patience among other things. What exactly is a Nobody? Well, that term is rather broad and fits many types of people from the homeless person sleeping on the bench to those who just don’t give a shit. Now, the essence of the title of Nobody is often not how the person feels about themselves but rather how society-at-large and small considers that person. The homeless person on the bench is considered a Nobody but probably doesn’t consider him or herself a Nobody. Maybe that person just feels down on their luck or they have chronic substance abuse or mental health problems. Nobody is the title they are labelled with by passers-by and a majority of the general public. It is not a title that most people choose.

A Nobody may also be a person in a normal low-to-middling paying job who does everything they can to support themselves or their family but has a hard time rising above their menial job. The People Who Think They Are Somebodies (TPS) and the actual Somebodies engage with them because they have to in order to accomplish some purchase or other task. There’s a whole list of professions and pursuits that are filled with Nobodies…
