Although I am not fluent, I hear Russian on the streets of Kyiv here every day. Lots of surzhek of course and more and more English it seems. I have friends in the Ukraine Armed Forces and who are true Ukrainian patriots (as well as others not in the Armed Forces) who still prefer Russian because it is the language they grew up with, it is their memories of childhood and families, first kisses and laying on the beach in Crimea. So, it's going to be a big issue for years to come. I am working on my Ukrainian and failing miserably. Luckily, I now know more Ukrainian than Russian so making some progress. My wife is a Russian speaker from Belarus and absolutely hates speaking the language but hasn't learned Ukrainian yet. She only uses Russian when there just doesn't seem to be any other option.
