All research in English I have conducted shows he is Ukrainian with some lands being granted to his family as nobility in Kharkiv under Mazepa. Yet, he distinctly calls himself "Russian" in his work. I sometimes wonder if Tolstoy, Turgenev, Dostoyevsky were simply brainwashed by muscovite imperialism as it does seem to go back that far. Take care.
