A Short Poem about Life during War

Photo by Author on 9th day of Russia-Ukraine War in Kyiv

Life tastes sweeter when it might end
At least when missiles are being shot
Least I’ll go out with my very best friend
She stands by me, afraid she is not

New life created, people getting married in war
Smiles on faces while the country burns
Never has hope been so near, despair so far
Away, and we stand strong as it all turns

Knowing our lives may end this very day
We still clean our floors, take dogs for walks
While they shoot at us, they won’t drive us away
And all the West does is talks and talks

We stopped listening to your empty words
We decided to live, to stand up with each other
We find a place of light to walk towards
We are sister to sister and brother to brother

We’re on our own out here in this onslaught
Living, breathing and doing all that can be done
In one way or another we all will have thought
Life is ours, even if we die we have already won
