The First Day of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Empty Streets of Kyiv: March 2, 2022: Photo by Author

One year ago, a child was born.
One year ago, a couple got married.
One year ago, someone had a party.
One year ago, Gogol’s ballet played.
One year ago, the war came to us.
One year ago, mass traffic jams leaving.
One year ago, people departed homes.

Today, a child turns a year old.
Today, a one-year wedding anniversary.
Today, someone, somewhere is having a party|
Today, a Ukrainian play is being performed.
Today, we remember but do not celebrate.
Today, traffic runs under war conditions.
Today, many people are back, others not.

Tomorrow, we’ll keep fighting.
Tomorrow, we’ll keep praying.
Tomorrow, we’ll keep living.
Tomorrow is another day at war.
Tomorrow, people will drive Ukraine’s roads.
Tomorrow, people come home, others leave.
Tomorrow, we move closer to victory.
