Really great story. I am a former urban beekeeper (Lakeland, FL) and now live in Kyiv (yep, smack dab in the middle of a war). I walk around the city here all the time and see great places for urban beekeeping but not starting that while the war is on. Wild bees visit me on my balcony here in the center of Kyiv while smoking a cigar and drinking scotch. Funny, how they visited me at my other place in Kyiv also. Guess they have a natural sense for who cares for them (maybe just wishful thinking?). Anyway, now I will get to the point. My bees were all taken from our local version of your "Bee Dude" and my hives were super-productive and the bees barely got varroa or other diseases that plaque domesticated bees. Thus, letting some wild ones in appropriate places is good unless it is in a personal home. You did the right thing. Those bees from your house have intermingled their genetics making them stronger than most kept by large beekeeping operations. So, thank you for saving them and being willing to spend money to do so.
