A Poem for Ukraine

Sunflower fields of Ukraine: Unknown source

The Blue and the Gold once flew over my high school
We wore those colors with pride in football fields
Our Thundering Herd ran over foes in shoulder pads

Blue and Gold colors always in my life on this earth
What colors they are, vibrant and true
Ukraine, what do these colors mean to you?

Is it the blue skies hanging over your lands?
Now obscured by smoke from distant battlefields?
Maybe the blue of the Black Sea from mountains on Crimea?

Are the golds those of abundant sunflowers on the steppes?
Or the wheat as it glows and blows gently with the wind?
Both now burned by the enemy we have come to hate.

Ah, hate is a dirty word but how else can we feel?
They have come to again try to ruin your beautiful state.
Our troops on the front, we know they will not yield.

Instead, they raise the blue and gold flag so high
Over towns, cities and villages as they go
Fighting for the colors the world has come to know.

Today we celebrate you, our revered blue and gold
However we can from trenches to quiet towns
Raise that flag high and fly it with pride.

There is no other like it today on God’s green earth
We won’t fall down before the marauders in fear
Instead, we’ll stand until we drive them from here.
